Seafood in Sicily

August 29, 2006

We went out to eat for a freind’s birthday and I just had to photograph some of the seafood (even though I don’t eat it myself)! I tasted one of the little fried fish but the flavor was too strong for me. I couldn’t bring myself to even try the deep-fried baby octupus.

img_8344.JPGHere is the octupus salad that I have talked about before. It’s chopped up octupus with olive oil, lemon, and parsely.

I’ve tasted it before and the flavor is good but I don’t like the texture of octupus or squid. So I didn’t feel the need to taste it again!

Next is a photo of some Paella. I didn’t even know that they made Paella in Sicily but two people who ordered it and really enjoyed it!

I didn’t even try the Paella when I was in Spain so I certainly didn’t try it here. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m not a big seafood eater.

That damn lobster was staring right at me!

And finally, my favorite. The pizza. Without seafood.

This wasn’t actually my pizza but I think I’ll order it next time. My pizza had grilled zucchini, corn and cherry tomatoes and it was also very good!

Pizza Quattro Gusti

Pizza Quattro Gusti, originally uploaded by elskermeg.

We went out for pizza the other night and this was what I ate. It was divided into four sections with different toppings: Porcini mushroom cream, black olive paste, four cheeses, and bruschetta. YUM!

Yesterday we went on a pottery buying, beach bumming, photo-taking road trip around the island. We made stops in Patti (at the Caleca factory store), Capo D’orlando, Santo Stefano di Camastra and Cefalu’. It was a fun day and the weather was really nice, not too hot. We lucked out with traffic, it seemed like we were the only car on the freeways most of the day.

Another Beach!

Lido Sayonara, originally uploaded by elskermeg.

This is the beach where we spent the Fourth of July. The water was beautiful and we swam out to the rocks which were good for climbing and jumping.

Mount Etna

Last of the snow, originally uploaded by elskermeg.

We drove up Mount Etna on Monday so Penny and Robert could see the volcano up close and personal. It was a beautiful day! We took the lift up and walked the trails for a while. It was nice and cool up there and the bright blue sky was a nice contrast to the black lava. We even found one last patch of snow up there. You can see the rest of the photos here.

Big Pile of Cheese, originally uploaded by elskermeg.

Today I drove to the province of Ragusa to meet up with some friends at Cheese Art 2006. It was a day filled with sun (meaning it was miserably hot), adventure (meaning I got lost), and cheese (and I mean a LOT of cheese).

I will write more about this adventure tomorrow but for now, the rest of the photos can be seen here.

To the Beach!

June 24, 2006

Almost there!, originally uploaded by elskermeg.

Today we went to Dustin’s house for a barbeque and trip to the beach. It was fun with lots of good food! His girlfriend Elisa’s mom made Lumpia (it was sooo good!) and fried rice and we also had pasta, hamburgers, bratwurst, coleslaw, green salad, and I can’t even remember what else. For dessert there were sicilian pastries and ice cream.

Elisa brought some friends that don’t speak a lot of English (although I’m pretty sure her friends speak more English than I speak Italian!) so Elisa orchestrated a game that allowed them to practice English while we practiced Italian. It had to do with picking a letter of the alphabet and then having to come up with Italian and English words that start with that letter. The categories were: Names, Things, Places, Animals and Professions. We had to come up with one word for each category whenever a new letter was chosen. It was actually pretty hard! We played in two teams — Italians vs. Americans. Elisa was the moderator because she is fluent in both languages. I think it was a tie when we stopped to eat.

After eating we all walked the two blocks to the beach and set up our umbrellas (it was HOT today). The water was perfect and we didn’t run across too many jellyfish. Justin was the only one who got stung…again. I told him not to swim out to the blue water but of course he didn’t listen. Everytime we go to Dustin’s house, I wish we had chosen a house by the beach instead of on the mountain! It’s so nice to be within walking distance of the water.
